Doreen Cohen began her association with NASA by attending the launch of Apollo 11 at Kennedy Space Center. She was fortunate to be invited with a group of friends, and had a ticket to drive onto the Center and view the launch from a 3-mile distance. There is no adequate way to describe the bone-rattling rumble of the rockets coming up through the ground at a launch and the sight of something that big slowly being lifted to the sky. It is a treasured memory.

After viewing the launch, she drove to California, listening to Neil Armstrong's voice on the car radio saying, “One step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” while driving on the Dallas-Fort Worth freeway.

Doreen received both her BA and MA degrees from Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida. Upon moving to the Bay Area, Doreen accepted a position at Santa Clara University as a librarian. She was involved in a variety of projects over her five years there.

Taking time out for marriage and family, she was actively involved in Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Soccer, PTA and Marching Band. Serving up a hot meal to 200 students, teachers and parents while on the road was all part of a band competition day. During these years, she worked part-time in several local public libraries and coordinated projects such as the Public Access Computer Program (Menlo Park Library) and the Outreach Program (San Mateo Library).

In 1988, Doreen accepted a full-time position as Reference Librarian at Ames. She became the Library Program Manager on the contract in 1989, serving in that role first with AlliedSignal and then with SCSC. In 1999, she accepted the position of Project Manager with Quantum Services, Inc., and is now Project Manager with Planners Collaborative, Inc. As Project Manager, she has actively participated in the Ames Contractor Council (ACC), serving as Awards Chair (2004), Vice President (2005), President (2006) and Director (2007). Participation in the ACC affords access to information both at the Center and Agency level, which is helpful to anyone who manages a contract at Ames.

Coming up on 20 years at Ames, Doreen has experienced the ups and downs that come not only with life in the government contracting business, but also in the government funding environment within NASA. Through it all, the reward was to know that she has been, in a small way, part of NASA's mission to explore the Universe in order to safeguard the future of humankind.
